Position: Monsoon Fellow
Location: Arizona
Duration: Through August 2018

Overview

Iconico wants to build advocacy capacity with organizations that confront systemic and political inequities around the world. While many struggles are grounded in a tradition of self-realization, social and political analysis, and community development and mobilization, the world is rapidly changing, and we have a responsibility to continue reflecting on what’s working, what we can improve, and sharing our learnings with community partners and allies.

To help identify organizers, activists, and advocates interested in trying new approaches and collecting learnings, we are launching the inaugural Monsoon Fellowship. The focus of the fellowship will be to engage community members, advocates, allies, and electeds, as well as conduct extensive research, to establish a network of supporters that will assist in completing project goals.

The Monsoon Fellowship will provide training, support, and work experience to empower college students in creating self-sustaining advocacy networks, strategic planning, and analytical research of economic injustice in education and/or international affairs. While desired outcomes and benchmarks will be outlined along with Iconico’s leadership, each fellow will be wholly responsible for the success of the project.  Chosen fellows will work independently while being supported and guided by the Iconico team to complete the established work-plan for the duration of the fellowship.

The Fellowship Universe
We recommend that current college students with a specific interest in advocacy, education, or research apply for fellowship. Fellows need to be physically in Arizona through the participation in the fellowship.

Benefits for Fellows
Monsoon Fellows will:
  • Community Building: Fellows will work with a team of passionate advocates and leaders fighting to address educational inequities in Arizona, and learn more about transnational community organizing.
  • Training: Fellows will receive instruction in grassroots organizing, digital communication practices, and continued training and mentorship during the duration of the fellowship.
  • Skill building: Fellows will develop skills including community organizing (e.g. developing a network, outreach, organizing community dialogues, phone banking, holding effective meetings, speaking one-on-one, creating trainings, etc.), communications (e.g. effective storytelling, enhancing communications via digital channels, etc.), and data research (e.g. identifying targets, analyzing statistics, tracking leaders, etc.)
  • Stipend: Fellows will receive a bi-weekly compensation for their part-time work.
  • Academic credits: Fellows are encouraged to seek course credit.

The Role of the Monsoon Fellow
The overarching goal of the Monsoon Fellowship program is to create sustainable campaigns and networks for specific projects, and share learnings with a broader community.  While the fellows will not build teams, they will establish viable systems, processes, and connections that will allow the continuation of projects after the fellowship term has ended.

Management: Fellows will report to the Iconico Campaigns Associate, who will assign additional day-to-day responsibilities based on the specific needs of the project.

Hours: A minimum of 12 hours per week.
Stipend: $700 per month.
